John W. Shafer was born to William and Mildred (Briggs) on March 7, 1932 at Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. He passed away March 12, 2018 at the Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska.
He attended school and after high school he wed Darlene Pankoke June 20, 1952 in Goehner, Nebraska. In October of 1952 he joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict he was discharged in October of 1954.
Their family grew with the birth of Diana, Pam, Scott and Tom. John and his family moved to Plattsmouth where he was an owner of the local grocery store. Family was very important and attending the family events was one of his favorite things to do. Watching UNL football or any Nebraska sports, gardening, baking kept him busy after retirement.
John is survived by his children, Diana (Ed) Foral of Springfield, NE; Pamela (Pat) Mertz of Papillion, NE; Scott Shafer of Bellevue, NE; Thomas Shafer (Martha Zook) of Omaha, NE; Grandchildren: Danielle (Sam) Inserra, Dustin (Ashley) Foral, Taylor Foral, Keri (David) Peters, Karly (Ron) Howard, Jack Shafer, Regan Shafer, Katie Shafer; Great Grandchildren: Callie, Skylar, Blayke Inserra; Bree, Owen Foral ; Logan and Hudson Howard and Kane Peters.
He is preceded in death by his parents William and Mildred Shafer; loving wife, Darlene D. Shafer; and his brother and sister, Don Shafer and Wanda Shafer.
Funeral Services will be Thur.(3/15) at 10:00 AM - Southridge Church 1250 N. Washington St. Papillion, NE.
Visitation Wed (3/14) from 1 P.M. until 8 P.M. with family greeting friends from 6 - 8 PM all at Southridge Church.
